Inara Serra

In the Allied planets, a sexual therapist Companion is a respectable profession and social elite, so her presence aboard “Serenity” often gives the crew more credibility. A Companion is similar to a high-class courtesan or Geisha, and provides both male and female customers with sexual services as well as emotional and psychological healing (“Inara Serra”).

Inara was under consideration to become the honorable position of high priestess when she inexplicably moved to the outer settlements (“Fireflywiki ‘Inara Serra’”) She is intelligent, kind, elegant, reliable with a bow and arrow and martial arts, and is a Buddhist (“Inara Serra (Firefly Character)”). Her presence aboard the ship is positive and there is a potential romantic interest between her and Mal, but overall her character is very mysterious. She will be absent for several episodes and then play major roles, but her past, her reasons for leaving the central system, or her motives are never openly discussed.
