Zoë Washburne

(played by Gina Torres)

 

Zoë was a commander under Mal for the Independent Army at the battle of Serenity Valley, and along with Mal was one of the only two Independent survivors (“Zoe Washburne (Firefly character)”). She was career military, and this attitude can be seen in the way she formally addresses Mal as ‘sir’ (“Fireflywiki.org ‘Characters’”). Unconditionally loyal to Mal, she is level headed, can be coldly rational, and is an experienced and talented fighter. Even though she showed an initial dislike to Wash in “Out of Gas”, she marries Wash after he joins the crew as pilot and the couple maintain a positive relationship (“Zoë Washburne (Firefly Character)”).

 

Gina Torres

Gina Torres has been seen in many television shows including Alias, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and 24 as well as the films The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. She was nominated for the International press Academy's “Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Drama” in 2004 (“Gina Torres”).
